How Thermal Mass Works...


Warmth in winter. Comfort in summer.

Canterbury’s seasonal sunlight is considered from the beginning of the design process.

In winter, the lower sun can reach the internal concrete through correctly positioned glazing. The concrete absorbs this free solar warmth during the day and gently releases it later as indoor temperatures begin to fall.

In summer, the higher sun is controlled by well-designed eaves, shading and glazing. When protected from direct sunlight, the concrete helps absorb excess indoor heat, while night ventilation can release accumulated warmth.

What Is Thermal Mass?

Thermal Mass is a natural thermal battery, built into your home.

Thermal mass is a material’s ability to absorb, store and gradually release heat.

Dense materials such as concrete have high thermal mass. Their temperature changes slowly, helping to moderate the peaks and dips that can occur in lightweight homes.

In a thoughtfully designed Monolith home, exposed concrete floors, walls and ceilings become part of the comfort system. They absorb useful solar warmth during the day and gradually release it as the air cools.

During summer, carefully designed shading prevents direct sunlight from overheating the concrete, allowing it to help absorb excess warmth from inside the home.
